Warrior Plumbing and Heating Summer Plumbing Tips

Essential Maintenance to Avoiding Plumbing Emergencies in Summer

Summer Plumbing Tips

As summer approaches, it’s important to prepare your plumbing system for the challenges that come with the hot weather. With a few simple plumbing tips and tricks, you can ensure that your home’s plumbing remains in top shape and prevent any potential emergencies. In this article, we will share valuable advice on summer plumbing maintenance and provide you with hot weather plumbing tips to keep your system running smoothly all season long.

Schedule a Plumbing Inspection

Before the summer heat sets in, consider scheduling a professional plumbing inspection. A licensed plumber can thoroughly assess your entire plumbing system, identifying any existing issues or potential problems that may arise during the summer. This preventive measure can save you from unexpected emergencies and costly repairs in the future.

Check Outdoor Faucets and Sprinklers

Outdoor faucets and sprinkler systems play a crucial role in maintaining your garden and outdoor spaces during the summer. Inspect these fixtures for any leaks, cracks, or damaged components. Ensure that the faucets are properly connected and the sprinkler heads are working efficiently. If you notice any issues, promptly repair or replace them to prevent water wastage and avoid costly water bills.

Protect Pipes from Heat

Hot weather can take a toll on your plumbing system, especially exposed pipes. To avoid potential damage, insulate pipes located in attics, basements, or crawl spaces using foam sleeves or wraps. Proper insulation helps regulate the temperature of the water inside the pipes and prevents them from becoming too hot, reducing the risk of bursts or leaks.

Be Mindful of Water Usage

During the summer, water consumption tends to increase due to outdoor activities, gardening, and more. Be mindful of your water usage to avoid putting excess strain on your plumbing system. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American family uses more than 300 gallons of water per day at home. This usage spikes in the summer, roughly two to four times more water than we use the rest of the year! Practice water-saving habits such as using a broom instead of a hose to clean outdoor areas, collecting rainwater for plants, and fixing any dripping faucets or running toilets promptly.

Prevent Clogged Drains

Summer activities can lead to an accumulation of debris and potential drain clogs. Implement preventative measures by using drain covers or strainers to catch hair, food particles, and other debris. Avoid pouring cooking oils, fats, and stringy foods down the drain as they can cause stubborn blockages. Regularly clean your drains using natural solutions like baking soda and vinegar or invest in enzyme-based drain cleaners to keep them flowing smoothly.

Maintain Your Water Heater

Your water heater works hard throughout the year, and the summer is no exception. Flush your water heater to remove any sediment buildup, ensuring its efficiency and prolonging its lifespan. Consider lowering the temperature on the water heater thermostat during the summer months to reduce energy consumption. If you notice any leaks or irregularities, contact a professional plumber for repairs or maintenance.

We will trace back to our humble beginnings, introduce our powerful Warrior partners, and delve into the mission and vision of Warrior Plumbing and Heating. Today is just the beginning of our story!

Humble Beginnings

The legacy of Warrior Plumbing and Heating traces back to Wallis Plumbing, founded by Phillip Wallis Goldsmith in 1935. The business was passed down through generations, from Phillip Wallis Goldsmith Jr. (Wally) to Frank Goldsmith, and finally to Brent Edward, Frank’s son. Although Brent Edward initially had different career aspirations, he discovered his true calling in the family business, bringing his own talents and values learned through mentorship.

In 2005, Brent Edward established Brent E. Goldsmith, Inc., embracing technology and delivering exceptional plumbing and heating services. In 2010, Brent Edward’s oldest son, Brent Ryan, joined the company, injecting a fresh perspective and rapidly advancing in the field. In 2017, Collin, Brent Edward’s youngest son and a Marine Corps veteran, joined forces to form Warrior Plumbing and Heating, showcasing resilience and dedication. Today, Warrior Plumbing and Heating proudly serves the Baltimore area, offering a comprehensive range of plumbing, heating, remodeling, and 24/7 emergency services.

Powerful Partners

Within Warrior Plumbing and Heating, the partners Brent Edward, Brent Ryan, and Collin Goldsmith each fulfill unique and vital roles. Brent Edward utilizes his extensive knowledge to train the team and ensure the delivery of high-quality work to residential and commercial customers. He also handles critical tasks such as project proposals and customer communication. Brent Ryan works directly in the field, assisting customers and ensuring smooth operations. He also manages administrative responsibilities and promptly resolves unexpected issues. Collin serves as the general contractor, overseeing various aspects of the business, from employee payroll to customer communication. He prioritizes customer needs and ensures a seamless experience with Warrior.

The partners collaborate effectively, leveraging their diverse expertise and engaging in open discussions to address challenges. They value their harmonious relationship and acknowledge its significant contribution to the businesses success. The partners admire each other’s dedication and unique skills, which have played pivotal roles in shaping the business. They also hold immense admiration for Collin’s resilience and sacrifices as a Marine Veteran.

Overall, the collective efforts and collaborative approach of the Warrior partners contribute to the smooth functioning and success of our family business.

Spring Plumbing Checklist

Our Top Seasonal Plumbing Tips

This winter season was a bit of a roller coaster ride for Maryland residents, with both low and high temperatures, but we officially entered spring! Spring is the perfect time to give your plumbing system a little bit of TLC to ensure it is ready to handle the change of seasons and the potential rain which can put a strain on your plumbing. It is important to take some precautions and perform some maintenance tasks to keep everything in working order so we’ve pulled together the below spring plumbing checklist with our top seasonal plumbing tips to help get you started!

Check your Sump Pump

Our first plumbing tip for the changing season is to check your sump pump. Spring showers can quickly flood more vulnerable areas of your home like basements and crawl spaces. A sump pump is only activated when it is needed and is meant to pump water out of these vulnerable areas, away from your home, to avoid flooding.

Just like any other system in your home, your sump pump can develop faults. Unlike other systems, though, it is often not obvious that your sump pump isn’t working properly until it is too late and it becomes a major spring plumbing problem. Checking your sump pump allows you to identify any issues before they cause any costly damage to your home. To check your sump pump, you can pour a bucket of water into the sump pit. Your sump pump should turn on and remove the water. Your sump pump should be inspected regularly to ensure it works properly when it’s needed most.

Upgrade your Shower Heads and Toilets

One way to prepare your plumbing for the spring weather is to consider spring plumbing upgrades. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American family uses more than 300 gallons of water per day at home. Roughly 70 percent of this use occurs indoors with flushing the toilet accounting for 24 percent and 20 percent coming from showering.

Upgrading our home’s shower heads and toilets to more water-efficient models can result in reduced water consumption, about a 40 percent decrease for the average family. Not only will this save you money on your water bill, but it’s also better for the environment as using less water helps to preserve a safe water supply and decreases water delivery and treatment costs.

Fix Leaks

Another key spring plumbing maintenance tip is to fix leaks within your home. Leaks can waste a surprising amount of water over time. The Environmental Protection Agency found that the average household’s leaks can account for nearly 10,000 gallons of water wasted every year with ten percent of homes having leaks that waste 90 gallons or more per day.

Common types of leaks include leaky faucets, worn toilet flappers, and other broken or leaking water pipes. These types of leaks are often easy an fix to avoid high water bills. They require only a few tools and hardware that can pay for themselves in water savings.

Check Your Water Heater

Over the winter, your water heater needed to work harder than usual so spring is a good time to check your water heater for any underlying issues. Sediment and other minerals tend to build up on the bottom of water heaters. This causes your water heater to utilize more energy and lose efficiency over time. Your home’s water heater should be flushed out regularly to avoid build up and prevent damage.

If you have a gas water heater, it’s important to keep an eye on the pilot, thermocouple, and pilot control valve. In electric water heaters, it’s important to inspect the thermostat and heating elements. A licensed Warrior plumber will be able to assess these parts for faults and ensure they are working properly with a spring plumbing tune-up.

Schedule a Professional Plumbing Inspection

Consider scheduling a spring plumbing inspection to make sure your entire system is in good working order. Scheduling regular plumbing maintenance for the spring season to maintain your plumbing systems can help prevent plumbing problems before they become emergencies. A plumber can inspect your plumbing, identify any potential issues, and make any necessary repairs or upgrades. It’s recommended that you schedule maintenance at least once a year to keep your plumbing system in good condition.

Avoid Major Plumbing Emergencies

Avoiding Major Plumbing Emergencies: Tips for Homeowners

Plumbing emergencies can range from minor annoyances to major disasters with various home appliances and fixtures. They can be costly to fix, and they can also cause significant damage to your property. While it isn’t always possible to completely avoid all plumbing issues, you can avoid most major plumbing emergencies with proper care and maintenance. We’ve pulled together some tips to help you avoid major plumbing emergencies and keep your plumbing system running smoothly.

Watch what you flush

Flushing anything other than toilet paper and bodily waste can cause major plumbing issues. Items such as paper towels, feminine hygiene products, and wipes (even the “flushable” kind) can clog your pipes and cause backups. Avoid flushing these items and dispose of these items in the trash instead to avoid major plumbing emergencies.

Keep your drains clear

Clogged drains are one of the most common plumbing emergencies, and they can be easily prevented by regularly cleaning your drain covers and keeping your pipes free of hair and other debris. If you have littles like we do, you may also need to watch for legos that accidentally made their way down the drain or a favorite action figure that just wanted to save the day.

One DIY tip we recommend for clogged drains is to always keep a plunger in your kitchen and bathroom. You can use the plunger to dislodge a clog. Another handy tool is a plumbing auger or drain snake. This is an inexpensive tool that can be found at any local hardwood store. It helps you to dislodge a clog by snagging items and bringing it out of the drain. If you can see an object that is causing the drain clog but don’t have this tool, you can try to create a home-made auger by bending a hanger. Be careful though not to scratch your toilet or sink with the metal wire of the hanger.

Know where the main shutoff valve is

Do you know where your main shut-off valve is? In the event of a leak, the first course of action is to prevent further damage by shutting off the water to your home. Ensure that you and each person who lives in the home knows where the main shut-off valve is and how to use it.

If you’d like some additional protection, there are smart-home products that can help avoid major plumbing emergencies. Products like smart water detectors, smart water monitors, and smart water shut off valves can alert homeowners to water leaks and can even turn off your water supply to prevent further damage to your home.

Install a sump pump

If you’re among the millions of homeowners who have a basement, you may have already experienced the aftermath of water damage. Water can wreak havoc on basements.  If your home is susceptible to basement flooding, consider installing a sump pump to remove water before it causes damage. Sump pumps are electric pumps that are placed at the bottom of your basement, or lowest point in the home and can assist in keeping water at bay. As the water reaches a certain level, a float valve activates the pump and it flushes, similar to a toilet. These pumps are a better way to ensure the safety of your home, as well as an effective method of preventing severe damage to your valuables.

Maintain your plumbing system

Scheduling regular maintenance to maintain your plumbing systems can help prevent plumbing problems before they become emergencies. A plumber can inspect your plumbing, identify any potential issues, and make any necessary repairs or replacements. It’s recommended that you schedule maintenance at least once a year to keep your plumbing system in good condition.

Top trends in bathroom and kitchen remodels

Time to Consider a Bathroom or Kitchen Remodel

We have celebrated bringing in the 2023 new year. With that, we’ve received calls from our customers looking to make 2023 the year they tackle their long overdue bathroom and kitchen remodeling projects, and Warrior Plumbing has you covered! Is a remodel the right choice for you, though? If you are a homeowner who is feeling antsy about your current home, you have two options: remodel or move. This is a tough decision, and there are many aspects to consider before deciding what is best for you.

Historically, moving has been recorded to be one of the most stressful life events for Americans, and if given a choice between the two, approximately 76% of Americans would rather use a set amount of money to remodel their home instead of using the money on a down payment to move into a new home. Due to the current state of the economy, we recognize that it is an incredibly expensive and difficult time to buy a home. For many of our customers, this has meant deciding to stay in their current home and remodeling instead of moving in 2023.

Warrior Plumbing and Heating has been known for its plumbing and heating expertise but we also have decades of construction experience under our MD Contracting License. If you decide remodeling your home is the best option for you, we can help manage your project from start to finish so that you can avoid the stress that comes along with moving and turn your home into the haven you need it to be!

Remodeling your Kitchen or Bathroom in 2023

Customize your Kitchen or Bathroom to Fit your Needs

If you already have a house that you love, doing a remodel is the simplest way to live in a house that fits your needs. Remodeling lets you customize your current home without the hassle and stress of a big move. There are a range of customizations you can make but the most popular include:

  • Updating the current design to create a new, fresh space;
  • Improving the ventilation to control stubborn mold/mildew and eliminate health concerns;
  • Increasing the storage space;
  • Improving accessibility; and
  • Lowering costly utility bills with new, efficient fixtures and appliances.

Increase the Value of your Home

Beyond having a kitchen or bathroom customized to meet your needs, there are financial reasons that make remodeling a good idea. Remodeling is one of the best ways to improve your home value strategically. If you decide to move in the future, an updated kitchen and bathroom can help your home stand out among prospective buyers, which will help your home to sell faster and for more money. Grow your house’s worth with smart projects and additions, and your net profit could skyrocket down the line.

Average Cost of a Remodel

Moving is stressful — and it’s expensive. The cost of moving may be similar to that of a renovation and is especially wasteful if you only gain minimal equity from a home sale. How much does an average bathroom or kitchen remodel cost, though? While each project varies and can be suited to meet your budgetary needs, CostvsValue.com provides average costs for bathroom and kitchen remodels in the Baltimore area. Looking at the figures, you can see that a kitchen or bathroom remodel rewards you with an average increase in home value equal to near or over 50% of your remodel cost. That basically means you’re getting your remodel at half price!

Three Reasons to use Warrior Plumbing for your Project

  1. Save time and money: Home improvement projects can be costly and time-consuming. Having done hundreds of remodels, we will stay on schedule and on a budget!
  2. Leave the project management to us: You likely have other work and family responsibilities to uphold in addition to any home improvement projects you have started. It is always better to leave the project management duties to a professional, particularly if you are working on a complex, multi-stage project.
  3. Enjoy peace of mind: There’s a major sense of accomplishment that comes with the successful completion of DIY home improvement projects. But there’s a major sense of disappointment should that project fail or remain incomplete.  We have seen it all and done it all many times. All you have to do now is enjoy the results.

We are offering a $1,000* discount on all kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects so the time to act is now!
