Avoid Major Plumbing Emergencies

Avoiding Major Plumbing Emergencies: Tips for Homeowners

Plumbing emergencies can range from minor annoyances to major disasters with various home appliances and fixtures. They can be costly to fix, and they can also cause significant damage to your property. While it isn’t always possible to completely avoid all plumbing issues, you can avoid most major plumbing emergencies with proper care and maintenance. We’ve pulled together some tips to help you avoid major plumbing emergencies and keep your plumbing system running smoothly.

Watch what you flush

Flushing anything other than toilet paper and bodily waste can cause major plumbing issues. Items such as paper towels, feminine hygiene products, and wipes (even the “flushable” kind) can clog your pipes and cause backups. Avoid flushing these items and dispose of these items in the trash instead to avoid major plumbing emergencies.

Keep your drains clear

Clogged drains are one of the most common plumbing emergencies, and they can be easily prevented by regularly cleaning your drain covers and keeping your pipes free of hair and other debris. If you have littles like we do, you may also need to watch for legos that accidentally made their way down the drain or a favorite action figure that just wanted to save the day.

One DIY tip we recommend for clogged drains is to always keep a plunger in your kitchen and bathroom. You can use the plunger to dislodge a clog. Another handy tool is a plumbing auger or drain snake. This is an inexpensive tool that can be found at any local hardwood store. It helps you to dislodge a clog by snagging items and bringing it out of the drain. If you can see an object that is causing the drain clog but don’t have this tool, you can try to create a home-made auger by bending a hanger. Be careful though not to scratch your toilet or sink with the metal wire of the hanger.

Know where the main shutoff valve is

Do you know where your main shut-off valve is? In the event of a leak, the first course of action is to prevent further damage by shutting off the water to your home. Ensure that you and each person who lives in the home knows where the main shut-off valve is and how to use it.

If you’d like some additional protection, there are smart-home products that can help avoid major plumbing emergencies. Products like smart water detectors, smart water monitors, and smart water shut off valves can alert homeowners to water leaks and can even turn off your water supply to prevent further damage to your home.

Install a sump pump

If you’re among the millions of homeowners who have a basement, you may have already experienced the aftermath of water damage. Water can wreak havoc on basements.  If your home is susceptible to basement flooding, consider installing a sump pump to remove water before it causes damage. Sump pumps are electric pumps that are placed at the bottom of your basement, or lowest point in the home and can assist in keeping water at bay. As the water reaches a certain level, a float valve activates the pump and it flushes, similar to a toilet. These pumps are a better way to ensure the safety of your home, as well as an effective method of preventing severe damage to your valuables.

Maintain your plumbing system

Scheduling regular maintenance to maintain your plumbing systems can help prevent plumbing problems before they become emergencies. A plumber can inspect your plumbing, identify any potential issues, and make any necessary repairs or replacements. It’s recommended that you schedule maintenance at least once a year to keep your plumbing system in good condition.

New Year, New Projects!

Time to Consider a Bathroom or Kitchen Remodel

We have celebrated bringing in the 2023 new year. With that, we’ve received calls from our customers looking to make 2023 the year they tackle their long overdue bathroom and kitchen remodeling projects, and Warrior Plumbing has you covered! Is a remodel the right choice for you, though? If you are a homeowner who is feeling antsy about your current home, you have two options: remodel or move. This is a tough decision, and there are many aspects to consider before deciding what is best for you.

Historically, moving has been recorded to be one of the most stressful life events for Americans, and if given a choice between the two, approximately 76% of Americans would rather use a set amount of money to remodel their home instead of using the money on a down payment to move into a new home. Due to the current state of the economy, we recognize that it is an incredibly expensive and difficult time to buy a home. For many of our customers, this has meant deciding to stay in their current home and remodeling instead of moving in 2023.

Warrior Plumbing and Heating has been known for its plumbing and heating expertise but we also have decades of construction experience under our MD Contracting License. If you decide remodeling your home is the best option for you, we can help manage your project from start to finish so that you can avoid the stress that comes along with moving and turn your home into the haven you need it to be!

Remodeling your Kitchen or Bathroom in 2023

Customize your Kitchen or Bathroom to Fit your Needs

If you already have a house that you love, doing a remodel is the simplest way to live in a house that fits your needs. Remodeling lets you customize your current home without the hassle and stress of a big move. There are a range of customizations you can make but the most popular include:

  • Updating the current design to create a new, fresh space;
  • Improving the ventilation to control stubborn mold/mildew and eliminate health concerns;
  • Increasing the storage space;
  • Improving accessibility; and
  • Lowering costly utility bills with new, efficient fixtures and appliances.

Increase the Value of your Home

Beyond having a kitchen or bathroom customized to meet your needs, there are financial reasons that make remodeling a good idea. Remodeling is one of the best ways to improve your home value strategically. If you decide to move in the future, an updated kitchen and bathroom can help your home stand out among prospective buyers, which will help your home to sell faster and for more money. Grow your house’s worth with smart projects and additions, and your net profit could skyrocket down the line.

Average Cost of a Remodel

Moving is stressful — and it’s expensive. The cost of moving may be similar to that of a renovation and is especially wasteful if you only gain minimal equity from a home sale. How much does an average bathroom or kitchen remodel cost, though? While each project varies and can be suited to meet your budgetary needs, CostvsValue.com provides average costs for bathroom and kitchen remodels in the Baltimore area. Looking at the figures, you can see that a kitchen or bathroom remodel rewards you with an average increase in home value equal to near or over 50% of your remodel cost. That basically means you’re getting your remodel at half price!

Three Reasons to use Warrior Plumbing for your Project

  1. Save time and money: Home improvement projects can be costly and time-consuming. Having done hundreds of remodels, we will stay on schedule and on a budget!
