  • Check Your Gutters and Downspouts. If water can’t flow through the gutter tray to its intended destination, it will ALWAYS find somewhere to go. That’s often down exterior walls, and into cracks which over time will not only cause damage to the structure, but also internal decay and mold growth. Keep your gutters and downspouts clear of debris at all times. Ideally downspouts discharge water at least 3 ft from the base of your home although we recommend 5 ft.
  • Examine Your Basement. While examining your basement, you want to look for any cracks in the flooring or the walls. Has mold started to grow? Does it smell? Is it damp? These are signs of damage.
  • Assess the Grade. Rainwater should flow away from the house at all times. To prevent both minor and potentially catastrophic water damage, such as foundation issues or basement flooding, the grade of your landscaping around your home’s perimeter should be assessed. To prevent pooling water, the ground adjacent to the home should slope gently away from the house at a rate of about six inches over ten lateral feet.
  • Schedule a Sump Pump and Water Heater Inspection. The pump should also be tested annually to ensure that it does what it is meant to do, at the first sign of trouble, and that it disposes of the water in an ideal location, away from the house. What Not to Flush Down Your Toilet

Lately we’ve noticed an influx of homeowners using their toilets for more than just human waste. To help ensure your home’s plumbing runs smoothly and to save you money in plumbing repairs, we pulled together this list of 10 things that you must NEVER flush down your toilet:

  1. Baby Wipes, Wet Wipes, and even wipes marketed as “flushable” – “Flushable” baby and adult wipes are becoming more popular nowadays. However, they are increasingly causing clogs and backups in sewage throughout Maryland homes. Although some brands may say they are flushable, they are not made of materials that easily breakdown in sewer systems like toilet paper. Efforts are being made to revise these guidelines to show a noticeable “DO NOT FLUSH” symbol on all packaging. Wipes of any kind should be disposed of in a trash can instead.
  2. Paper towels and Tissues – While you may wish to save money and help the environment by using washable cloths and rags, paper towels and tissues are a staple in most households. Paper Towels and tissues also do not dissolve like toilet paper does. These items are best discarded in the trash rather than down the toilet.
  3. Q-tips and Cotton Balls – While it is easy to think that the cotton in Q-tips and cotton balls will break down since they are made of the same cotton found in toilet paper – they actually don’t! These items will clump together and cause blockages within your pipes.
  4. Cooking Grease and Food – Grease and other foods should never be poured into your toilet or other drains in general. Grease may look like a liquid that can be easily dumped down the drain but all grease will cool, harden, and clog up your pipes. You can collect your grease in another container until it cools before throwing it in the trash or save the grease to reuse it while cooking!
  5. Medications – You may think it is a good idea to flush any medications that are no longer needed or expired to ensure they are out of harm’s way. You can actually be doing more harm by flushing them down the toilet. These substances may pass through sewage treatment plants and septic tanks which can lead directly to soil and groundwater. Since these medications can have toxic effects on groundwater supplies and wildlife, it is always best to properly dispose of any medications. You can return unused, unneeded, or expired prescription drugs to pharmaceutical take-back locations for safe disposal. Ask your local pharmacy or law enforcement agency about pharmaceutical take-back programs.

Carbon Monoxide – A Toxic Relationship

And Carbon Monoxide is the leading cause of unintentional

poisoning deaths in the United States.

We’re plumbers, not poets…

But Valentine’s Day is as good a day as any to remind you, our beloved customers, how to protect yourself and your loved ones against Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning.

Over 400 people in the U.S. die each year and as many as 50,000 people visit emergency rooms across the U.S. with 4,000 of them hospitalized… all due to accidental CO poisoning (The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

Most of these incidents occur in the winter, often by malfunctioning heating systems. And they CAN be prevented.

Here’s how:

Remember – CO is known as the “invisible killer”. It is odorless, tasteless, and colorless.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the following prevention measures:

  • Have your home’s furnace, water heater, and any other gas or coal-burning appliances serviced by a qualified technician every year.
  • Have working CO detectors in your home, especially near sleeping areas.
  • Take a portable CO detector with you when traveling.
  • Make sure your home’s dryer, furnace, and fireplace are properly vented. The same is important for car tailpipes, that can become clogged with snow.
  • Don’t start the car to warm it in a closed space, or leave it running in the garage, even if the door is open.
  • If your car has a keyless ignition, double-check that you have turned the engine off.
  • If your electricity is out, do NOT use the gas stove, a charcoal grill, or a fuel-powered space heater to warm the area. Keep gas-powered generators or engines at least 20 feet away from the house.

The U.S. Fire Administration put together a list of common carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms, which are often mistakenly believed to be the flu.

Low to moderate-level symptoms:

  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness

High-level symptoms:

  • Mental confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of muscular coordination
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Death

With some preparation and a plan in place, you can endure this winter season feeling better than you did after watching the finale of Game of Thrones.

Winterizing your home’s plumbing and heating system is a crucial process that prepares your home for inevitable winter weather. With freezing temperatures and snowfall, your home is much more susceptible to damage.

1) Water Heaters

With freezing temperatures and the ground temperature plummeting, the water entering your home becomes colder. This means that your water heater needs to work harder than usual. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, your water heater is the second-largest (Heating/Air Conditioning is the first) expense in your home. Depending on the type of water heater 12 to 18 percent of your Gas or Electric bill is for hot water.  The average American household utilizes 64 gallons of water per day If you have a teen (or teens) your usage could be double that figure.  At the 64 gallon average, the average home will spend between $400 – 600 on water heating per year. This might not seem like much to some but if you can reduce that cost. (See the water heater article)

The U.S. Department of Energy provides several useful tips to save on your home’s water
heating –

  • Turn down the water heater thermostat. Often, hot water heaters come set at 140 degrees. 120 is often a good setting for many households.
  • Shorten the shower. A long hot shower can be a relaxing but can be expensive if every night. Think about limiting
    your bathing time save the long showers for special ocassions .
  • The most efficient way to shower is to do a quick rinse then turn the water off while you soap up. Only turn the water back on when you’re ready to rinse.
  • Replace full-flow with low-flow faucets and showerheads. The fewer gallons you use the lower your utility bill will be.
  • Look at your other appliances which use hot water. Use the hot water settings as needed not as the default. Also, if you have had them for 10 years seriously consider replacing them with new more efficient models.
  • If you didn’t know, using a fully loaded dishwasher is more efficient than hand washing.
  • Leaky faucets add up. A leak as small as one drip per second can add $1.00 to your monthly utility bill.
  • Wrap your hater heater with insulatation. This is an inexpensive option helps your hot water better retain its heat. This uses less energy and reduces your electric or gas bill.
  • The right fit. For storage water heaters make sure you are using the correct tank size for your needs. You need your water heater tank to be large enough to handle the busiest hot water usage time in your household, but not too large or you will be  wasting energy heating water you don’t normally need.   1. AGE: Most water heaters begin to have problems when they’ve been in regular use for 8 to 10 years.
  2. RUST: Is your hot water less than clear? Or is rust visible on the storage tank or pipe connections?

Standard Storage Water Heater

This is the most common water heater. It consists of a large storage tank filled with water being kept warmed to a set temperature by either gas or electricity.

Cost: $ (low)

Life Expectancy: 10-15 Years

Pros: Lower Purchase Cost

Cons: Standby heat loss -Energy can be wasted as the water stored in the tank is heated to a set temperature, adding to operating cost.

Improvements: Insulation added to the storage tank can reduce heat loss and lower operating costs.

Tankless Water Heater

These are much smaller than storage tanks and mounted to the wall. They heat the water only on demand so there is no tank full of water that is being kept warm 24/7. Tankless water heaters do have limitations and depending on the size of the home and the locations were hot water is required you may need to install multiple units.

Cost: $$

Life Expectancy: 20+ years

Pros: Provides a constant supply of hot water and is 20 – 50% more energy-efficient than storage water heaters, saving a minimum of $ 100 per year.

Cons: A limited flow-rate of hot water can stretch a tankless water heater to its limits. Sometimes the energy savings do not justify the cost of purchase and installation

Optimization: For homes with larger hot water needs additional tankless water heaters can be installed in parallel or with separate connections balancing the hot water load.

Heat Pump  

(Not recommended for colder climates) These water heaters use a combination of electricity and warm air or warmth from the ground. In warm climates, this type of ‘hybrid’ water heater can reduce energy usage of up to 60%. Upfront costs are greater and these can require more space.

Cost: $$

Life Expectancy: 10-15 Years

Pros: 2-3 times more energy-efficient than a standard storage water heater and lower operating costs saving almost $300 per year



Cost: $$$  life Expectancy: 20 Years

Pros: 50% more efficient than gas or electric water heaters

Cons: May require a backup system to handle cloudy days and times of high demand

Optimization: Adding an insulated storage tank that can be installed along with the system.


Tankless Coil and Indirect

These water heating systems leverage the heat from a home’s furnace or boiler. The Tankless version uses a heat exchanger to warm cold water on demand. For this to be an effective system the furnace or boiler needs to on throughout the year and therefore only works in cold climates. The Indirect heating system adds a storage tank containing the heat exchanger (from the furnace or boiler). These can be more efficient but still only work best in cold climates.

Life Expectancy: 10-11 Years

Pros: Lower installation cost

Cons: Inefficient choice for many homes as these work best in warmer climates

If you are living in a property built before 1978 you may be in danger.

“Lead-based paint and lead contaminated dust are the most hazardous sources of lead for U.S. children. Lead-based paints were banned for use in housing in 1978. All houses built before 1978 are likely to contain some lead-based paint. However, it is the deterioration of this paint that causes a problem.”


Sadly, too many families in Maryland are forced to choose between a home that is affordable and one that is healthy. At Warrior Plumbing and Heating, we believe that a home should be both. As of May 2019, Warrior Plumbing and Heating is certified through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to conduct lead-based paint renovation and repair for a healthy home at an affordable price.

What is LEAD?

According to the EPA, Lead is a naturally occurring element found in the earth’s crust. Lead’s density and ability to absorb vibration protects against harmful radiation. Despite this benefit, Lead can be highly toxic to humans and animals. Lead can be found both inside and outside of the home as deteriorated lead-paint can mix with household dust and soil.

Why is it DANGEROUS?

The toxic nature of lead can cause a range of health problems. Young children are especially vulnerable as their growing bodies are more sensitive to lead’s damaging effects. When lead is absorbed into the body, it can cause damage to the brain and other vital organs. Lead may also cause behavioral problems, learning disabilities, seizures and in extreme cases, death. Some symptoms of lead poisoning may include headaches, stomachaches, nausea, tiredness, and irritability. For children, there may be no symptoms at all.

What can be DONE about it?

The EPA recommends that homeowners take the following simple steps to lower the risk of exposure to lead:

  • Inspect and maintain all painted surfaces to prevent paint deterioration

  • Address water damage quickly and completely

  • Keep your home clean and dust-free

  • Clean around painted areas where friction can generate dust, such as doors, windows, and drawers. Wipe these areas with a wet sponge or rag to remove paint chips or dust

  • Use only cold water to prepare food and drinks

  • Flush water outlets used for drinking or food preparation

  • Clean debris out of outlet screens or faucet aerators on a regular basis

  • Wash children’s hands, bottles, pacifiers, and toys often

  • Teach children to wipe and remove their shoes and wash hands after playing outdoors

  • Ensure that your family members eat well-balanced meals as children with healthy diets absorb less lead.


The EPA’s final recommendation for home-owners is to ensure that any home renovation, repairs, or painting are conducted by a lead-safe certified contractor who can follow lead-safe work practices.
